There is a bug in the migration code for Greasemonkey 0.5.1 which is affecting some windows users. 0.5.2 fixes this issue, and has been circulated through the mailing list and is looking good, but I won't be able to post it until tonight.
If you want to fix your 0.5.1, I don't think it's a good idea to edit the profile files directly unless you really know what you're doing. Instead, these steps should fix most people's corruption.
- Shut down Firefox.
- Find your profile directory
- Move profileDir/extensions/{e4a8a97b-f2ed-450b-b12d-ee082ba24781}/chrome/
greasemonkey/content/scripts/ to profileDir/scripts. - Remove profileDir/gm_scripts if it exists
- Rename profileDir/scripts to profileDir/gm_scripts
- Restart Firefox

I've pretty much had it with Greasemonkey for now. It's a wonderful idea, but the ongoing hassles (not playing well with other extensions, security issues, now this) are more than I'm willing to deal with.
I'll try Greasemonkey again when things are a little more settled.

I feel your pain, but at least they are honest about the versioning (e.g. 0.5), and are quick to fix major issues. I mean look at how many problems still exist in IE _6_.

I entered a similar bug -- http://bugzilla.mozdev.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11392 -- but I'm not sure it was an actual dupe. I can't confirm whether or not that's the case until I get back to work on Tuesday (when I'll be back at my work computer). Do you know if the bug is indeed a duplicate?

Hey anonymous, just stick with 0.3.5 until there's a thoroughly tested release if you're having so much trouble. You don't need to install every bleeding edge release if you're not interested in testing them out and reporting any problems.

This was actually my fault because I put it onto mozdev.
If it were not for the major migration issue, I think it would have been a pretty good release actually.
Just trying to keep someone from abandoning a damn good extension because of a stumble is all. :)

Using 9/4 branch and gm .5.3, I'm unable to get any of my scripts to inject including gmail conversation preview, googleX, or any of my platypus scripts.
I'm afraid the work-around doesn't work (for me anyway). I've tried it twice now (with 0.5.1 and 0.5.3) and both time it causes firefox to not even start after the "fix". Luckily I didn't delete anything so I was able to "unfix" the mess. I'm tired of trying...I'd uninstall it if I could, but the damn thing causes too many problems when I try. I don't think I'll try this again until at least 0.6...more likely 1.1.
Any chance of releasing a version which will work under Firefox 1.5

I have applied the patch from Mozilla
and have most scripts working except for Gmail Conversation Preview.
It's a pretty cool idea, but it obviously needs some more work. When you consider all the potential conflicts with other extensions that people commonly use on Firefox....plus consider issues created by changes from one Firefox version to another...
This type of thing really won't work unless a dedicated team of people are willing to start working on removing scripts that are proven to not work, from the Greasemonkey page, and also get a team of people to test and update scripts so that for example, if Firefox goes from version 1.06 to 1.07, you don't have users suffering in agony over why their scripts break and won't work any longer.
There also needs to be a better submission system that requires proof of a script working on multiple versions of Firefox, including trunk builds...before it's allowed up on the site for other users to download.
I'm using the latest Firefox and the latest Greasemonkey (1.5.3) but I can't get it to install any scripts...

Maby this is the wrong place for this comment, but I just installed 0.5.3, and am still experiancing the problem.
It's still not working. All of my problems with Greasemonkey started after downloading the new version. Now I can't install any user scripts, and the one that I had used with it previously doesn't work. Help please!

Numerous attempts to follow the instructions with no success. Even deleted the entire extensions dir and started from scratch, still getting the unresponsive dialog box.
I just installed 0.5.3 on my machine. It has never seen Greasemonkey before. When I right click on a script I don't get an Install Script option in the context menu.

DUDE! everything works, no, not those directions what to change, but, i just removed all the tracks of GM and new install worked just ok! tried installing 0.3.5 first, it won't work, so removed everything and installed latest version, WORX! GOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

None of the suggested fixes worked for me, so I gave up and converted my user script into an extension using http://www.letitblog.com/greasemonkey-compiler/. Works great, and no more worries about Greasemonkey.

Well, this really really sucks.
Couldn't get it working in FF on Win2K. It finally killed Firefox on me. I can no longer launch FF on my PC...no amount of uninstalling and reinstalling has fixed it.
Then, assuming this was a PC issue, tried it on my Mac. Killed Greasemonkey on that too.
I would really suggest pulling down this release until these major issues are fixed.

How long has the 1.5 beta codebase been available? Even the rarely-if-ever updated Adblock has a compatible version, and Greasemonkey doesn't. All that will happen is that you will be forgotten
Just as an FYI if these steps don't work...
In your gm_scripts directory... Make sure there is config.xml along with the default-config.xml. (If it doesn't already exist, copy the default-config.xml to config.xml)
If these steps don't work for you.. In your gm_scripts directory, copy the default-config.xml to config.xml and then restart FFox and it should work after that.
Download greasemonkey 0.3.5 it should fix the problem if these steps don't work for you.

never had greasemonkey installed and yet 0.5.3 doesn't work with FF 1.0.7. couldn't add new scripts and it wouldn't work or do anything.
Many people are complaining that the above directions do not solve the issue. Furthermore, the ok-button seems not to work, and no scripts can be installed. Deinstalling and reinstalling, even restart of the OS is to no avail.

Rename the file default-config.xml to config.xml in the gm_scripts folder.
